We are writing to you today with exciting news. After years of planning, we are now back on track for the renovation of Hendrie Hall, the Yale Glee Club’s home since 1937. This represents the final and most important phase in the renovation of Yale’s entire music campus, which began with the Irving S. Gilmore Music Library, and continued with Sprague Hall, Leigh Hall, and Stoeckel Hall. Hendrie Hall will become the epicenter of music on campus, with a link to Leigh Hall and common areas that will dramatically improve every Yale student’s musical experience. Our building will be the envy of music schools the world over, and the Glee Club Room will remain at its heart.
Hendrie Hall will be painstakingly restored from top to bottom, and new spaces will include a state-of-the-art orchestral rehearsal facility and greatly expanded individual and small ensemble rehearsal spaces. The Glee Club Room itself will retain its historic character (and, of course, the beautiful windows overlooking the New Haven Green), while receiving many long-needed aesthetic, acoustical, and technological updates. Our office spaces will be fully refurbished, and a new sectional room will be added adjacent to our main room.
Through the generosity of George Mead (YGC ’50) and the Cornelia Cogswell Rossi Foundation, Inc. we are much closer to the amount of money needed to restore and renovate the Glee Club Room and our adjoining spaces. We are not yet at our goal, however, and work cannot begin until that goal is reached. We need your help.
Because this represents a once in a lifetime opportunity to transform the home of the Yale Glee Club, we have made the decision to offer $250,000 of the Yale Glee Club’s funds as a matching gift. Every contribution – up to $250,000 – we receive from individual members of the Yale Glee Club Associates toward Hendrie Hall this year will be matched, dollar for dollar. Each individual member of the YGCA Board of Directors has already enthusiastically committed to making a personal donation.
To help make giving easier, donations can now be made online: http://yalegleeclub.org/pledge.php.
Forms will also be mailed to all Glee Club alumni, so you can also donate by mail if you prefer.
We all share an extraordinary tradition, and Hendrie Hall has been a large part of that tradition for many years. Please do your part to ensure this tradition will live on - in Hendrie Hall - for generations to come, and join us in making a donation today.
Yours in song,
Jeffrey Douma, Director, Yale Glee Club
Robert Blocker, The Henry and Lucy Moses Dean of Music, Yale School of Music
Clay Kaufman, President, Yale Glee Club Associates
